Denture Care

October 2, 2024

Here are some tips to get used to your dentures:

  • Ease into eating. Avoid tough meats, raw vegetables and anything sticky at first. Choose soft foods first, and cut your food into small pieces. Chew food on both sides of your mouth at the same time to avoid “tipping” your dentures. Don’t bite with your front teeth. Use your canine teeth and those behind them to do the biting.
  • Practise speaking to yourself. If you’re having trouble talking with your new dentures, practice reading aloud.

Dentures need daily care. For complete dentures, brush your gums and tongue with a soft-bristled brush before inserting your dentures. Take your dentures out of your mouth and brush them at least once a day. Place them in water or a denture-cleansing liquid while you sleep.

For partial dentures, brush your gums and tongue with a soft-bristled brush before inserting your dentures. But don’t let partial dentures with metal parts soak in a denture-cleansing solution for more than 15 minutes. Be gentle when handling your dentures, as they can be fragile and might break if dropped.
